I love this book! Finally an author who considers the children not often represented enough in children’s books…Such a powerful message for little ones going through the same. Perfect for PSHE lessons at school too. Looking forward to more from this author!

Dottie’s Tall Tales

This guide is such a great resource for parents of primary aged children! I found the reading guide really reassuring and it gave me lots of practical ideas for ways to help my reluctant reader, plus some great suggestions for books that are just right for their age. It’s been such a helpful resource for me as a parent – I feel much more confident about supporting my child’s reading and have already seen a more positive attitude towards reading from my little one since implementing the ideas.

Dottie’s Tall Tales is such a gem of a book!…The illustrations are bright and engaging, and the pacing was perfect for my young reader. It sparked some great conversations about feelings, truth, and why some kids might hide behind stories. Highly recommend this for classroom shelves and bedtime reading alike!

Homework help without the tears: Practical tips for parents of primary-aged children

This lovely book by Vicky Phillips works on multiple levels – from engaging visuals, to fun stories, to clever rhymes, and finally, to the implicit and explicit messages of acceptance from friends. It is the type of children’s book where the urgent request of “Please read it to me again” will surely be heard for many years to come. The colorful illustrations add great energy and excitement to the “tall tales” told by the hero, Dottie. More than anything, though, it was Dottie’s friends’ refrain used throughout the story that affected me the most and brought emotions to a climax. As much as her friends were entertained by her stories — one wilder and more fantastic than the last — they would always implore her, “Please stop it, Dottie, there’s just no need, to make up stories, the children did plead.”

With this repeated line, the author conveyed that Dottie’s friends were rooting for her, not criticizing her — trying to save her from pain, not cause it. They were accepting Dottie without preconditions, which sets up the emotional climax where Dottie acknowledges the truth of her situation. What a wonderful message of acceptance and empathy, indeed.

I’ve had the occasion to read a few dozen “early reader” children’s picture books in recent months, and this is one of the very best there is. From the pictures to the words to the supportive messages told and illustrated with humor and skill, it is sure to delight children everywhere. Highly recommended!
